What You Will Need
Before beginning the online application, it will be helpful to have the following information ready:
-- a list of your extracurricular activities, hobbies, awards, personal accomplishments.
-- a list of relevant classes you have taken in high school.
-- draft answers to the short answer essay questions.
-- your final cut video. (video instructions)
Application Types and Requirements
To apply as an individual you must either: 1) have an innovative business idea for a product or service (see What Kind of Idea? for more information), or 2) have skills or talents and an interest in entrepreneurship that will make you a valuable addition to a business team.
When applying under scenario 1, it is possible that you could be chosen, but your business idea would not; in which case, you would be assigned to work on someone else's idea as part of a team. If you are not willing to work on another person's idea, there is an option on the application to indicate that you want to be considered only for your idea.
Requirements: Individual applicants must:
If you have an existing company, you may not apply with that company or its product. However, you may apply with a new and different idea or to be part of another team. If you plan to do the later, be sure to tell us about your existing business in your application or video so we know your entrepreneurial aspirations.
A Team must apply with no more than five members. A team must apply with an innovative business idea for a product or service (see What Kind of Idea? for more information). Teams will be accepted as a group. If a team is selected and a member is unable to attend, the entire team will not be able to attend GSE unless an exception is granted prior to May 1, 2014. A team will be required to develop the idea they apply with. Existing companies are not eligible.
Requirements: each individual team member must:
Additionally the team must: select a point person to:
Team composition matters as much as the product or idea. Teams should be formed with a combination of skills. Generally, a successful team needs someone with great technology skills (programming/hardware/engineering/science), great interpersonal skills (sales, customers), leadership skills (your CEO) and design skills (branding, marketing, product design). Most people are skilled in one or maybe two areas, but it is extremely rare to find someone who can wear all the hats.
